Attorney Saba F. Syed authored a feature in the October issue of the Dallas Bar Association (DBA) newsletter Headnotes titled, “Can the Practice of Law Make Us Wise?” Syed discusses if and how the practice of law can enlighten attorneys without allowing the challenges of the practice to gnaw away at them. She discusses what “wisdom” means for attorneys and how they can grow from their experiences and share their wisdom with others.
In her column, Syed notes that through their practice, lawyers have a unique understanding of the “seedy cross section of life that creates problems for our community,” which allows them to, potentially, “counteract life’s difficulties by being the change they wish to see in others.” Attorneys also have the chance to witness and be a part of societal changes that allow them to learn and grow in a way that others may not be afforded. Syed says the goal is to “become great people who are conscientious, gracious, and caring.” She closes her column by adding that the DBA is a community for lawyers to learn from one another and to become better attorneys and better people.
